, although I've been trying for ages trying to do something similar. Did u use illustrator for the square debris?

No, just a square brush in photoshop with scatter and size jitter. To create really awesome debris, use dual brush with a triangle as the base shape and a crescent for the dual brush. Play around with size and scattering.
